Taylor Takes Control At Snetterton

13301254 856446584462100 4319496097033593647 oThe lap times were blistering in the DFDS Seaways Yamaha Past Masters series, as the weekend’s action was a showcase of the talents of reigning champion Matt Barber, and reigning BMZRC 250 MZ champion, Mark Taylor, as the rivalry and battle for the 2016 championship kicked up a gear.

The racing was fierce and it was first blood to the series’ newcomer, as Taylor set pole and raced to victory in the weekend’s opener. Barber crossed the line in second place, while a lonely ride for the reigning YPM Rookie champion saw him take third place.

Marc Prentice took the Clubman class honours, while the Rookie spoils went to Paul Middleton.

Barber retaliated in race two, smashing the lap record with a 2:11 flat on his way to victory. Taylor finished second, with Doug Edmondson bettering Grant in a drag race to the line to finish third.

Giles Harwood’s fifth place gave him the Clubman win, while Middleton bagged another 25 points in the Rookie class.

Disaster struck for Barber in Sunday’s opening race, as a DNF saw him drop 25 points to his rival, as Taylor took his second win of the weekend.

13346235 856446844462074 3114313073053522613 oBarber’s demise meant Edmondson and Grant’s duel became the fight for second place, a fight that was decided by less than a tenth of a second in Edmondson’s favour.

Harwood fended off Andy Davies for fourth and another Clubman win, while Middleton made it three from three in the Rookie classification.

Taylor’s win in the final race saw him complete his hat-trick, as Barber recovered from the back of the grid to second place, but surrendered another five points to Taylor. Harwood took another Clubman victory with a spectacular third place overall.

Middleton also completed a dominant weekend for himself, as he added another 25 points towards his challenge for the Rookie crown.

Season Starts In Style At Donington Park

Donington Park played host the opening round of the DFDS Seaways Yamaha Past Masters, which had seen a resurgence in grid numbers over the winter.

However, reigning champion Matt Barber picked up from where he left off in 2015, and, despite starting from the back of the grid after a technical problem in qualifying, took the win in the opening race of the season.

After stalking down former BMZRC champion Mark Taylor and returning YPM champion Rik Ballerini, Barber snatched the lead on the final lap, seizing on a mistake from Ballerini, to draw first blood of the season.

Ballerini also lost out to Taylor in the dying moments of the race, as Taylor finished second on his YPM debut with Ballerini third.

The Clubman win went the way of Giles Harwood, who finished ninth overall, while Rookie honours went to Mark Ewens.

It was also a race of attrition too, with last year’s dominant Rookie champion, Scott Grant, crashing when trying to negotiate a back-marker, while Paul Middleton and Malcom Hutcheon came together on the last corner of the last lap.

Barber was again on the top step of the podium in race two, after stalking Ballerini for most of the race. On the penultimate lap he made a move for the lead stick, but was chased to the chequered flag, the gap less than two tenths of a second at the end of the race.

13040863 831233876983371 262118763498779831 oDoug Edmondson bettered Taylor on the second lap to move into third place, and from there was never challenged for the final spot on the podium. Harwood was again leading Clubman, and Middleton came from the back of the grid to take the Rookie win.

Barber was denied a perfect weekend, however, as Edmondson proved he will be in the hunt for the championship this year with a dominant start to finish victory.

The rest of the field could only watch the 14-plated TZR250 disappear into the distance, and were left to do battle behind.

Six seconds after Edmondson crossed the line, Taylor came out on top in the scrap with Barber, the duo second and third, highlighting how hard-fought this year’s championship will be.

Harwood was again the leading Clubman, and Middleton the first of the Rookies across the line.

The Yambits sponsored YPMRC Club Bike has been booked for two more rounds of the 2016 season, taking the total so far to three.

A number of current YPM racers took their first steps into the the class via the Yambits Club Bike, including last year's champion Matt Barber, and it will provide Denis Halil and Joe Dickenson with their first taste of the competitive-but-friendly two-stoke series.

Halil, from Hulbridge in Essex, is a self-confessed two-stroke addict, and has a history of racing TZ250s. After a break from racing, Halil is looking to return to racing with a two-stroke class that is more affordable than racing GP machinery, and has been following the racing vi the YPMRC Facebook page for some time. He will make his class debut at the Brands Hatch GP round in August.

Dickenson will contest the Oulton Park round in June, and hails from Northwich. The 25-year-old has raced CB500s, and is a fan of single make championships.

Looking for a change of scenery for 2016, Dickenson is also eager to ride and race a two-stroke; something he has yet to do.
